Discover 10 Easy Ways to Read Piano Sheet Music
By Andrea Monk
Learning to read piano sheet music can feel a bit daunting at first. With clear instructions you will gradually be able to decode the music symbols. You will be off and away, playing your favourite piano pieces in no time at all.
The entire notation system was devised over 1,000 years ago by Guiddo of Arezzo, an Italian Monk. It has hardly changed in its 1,000 year usage. Let me show you 10 easy ways to read piano sheet music.
#1 – Notes can only do one of 3 things: stay the same, go up or go down. Look at the direction that the notes are moving.
#2 – Find the highest note in the piece.
#3 – Find the lowest note in the piece.
Use these easy mnemonics to remember the names of the notes of the 2 music staffs.
#4 – In the treble clef the 5 lines are “Every Great Band Deserves Fame”
#5 – In the treble clef the 4 spaces spell “FACE” – Space and Face rhyme!
#6 – In the bass clef the 5 lines are “Great Band Deserve Fame Always”
#7 – In the bass clef the 4 spaces are “All Cows Eat Grass”
#8 – Say the names of the notes as you play them. Do this for each hand separately.
#9 – Clap the rhythm of each bar. For a one beat rhythm (a quarter note) say “Tea.” For 2 half beat rhythms (2 eighth notes) say “Coffee”.
#10 – Look for any identical bars or patterns of music. This will cut down your reading time considerably.
